Meet The Save Gentleman Jack Campaign Team

"Rome was not built in a day, but they were laying bricks by the hour"

This old adage, first noted in a French medieval script in 1190, but adapted further by English writer John Heywood in 1546 feels like a wonderful statement of intent for the Save Gentleman Jack campaign team, this website, and many many others in the Ann(e)dom who have committed time and energy to campaigning to Save Gentleman Jack since our show was unceremoniously ‘cancelled’.

Achieving any goal takes time, patience and creativity, but most importantly people. This website has been carefully constructed to serve the needs of everyone who wants to Save Gentleman Jack
But we are not finished yet - it’s just the beginning.

Please meet just some of the individuals who have been "..laying the bricks by the hour".

Favourite episode of Gentleman Jack and why?: Although it’s difficult to find just one fave in so many episodes of brilliant writing, I am in love with the final episode of season two. The tone of the show shifts in season two in order to highlight the impact of the deeper relationship between Anne and Ann. This is seen in fiery and romantic ways throughout the eight episodes, but never more brilliantly than when the Ann[e]s team up to beat Captain Sutherland at his own game. The subtle glances between the two women serve to let the audience know they are alright - and will be alright. They made it this far and they aren’t going back.

Favourite character in Gentleman Jack and why?: I see Shibden Hall as much of a character as Anne Lister and Ann Walker. The very best stories always feature “place” woven throughout. Shabby little Shibden is part of Anne’s makeup - its dark walls protect her from cruel society and also witness Anne’s beautiful marriage to Ann.

Are you an Ann or Anne?: I’m probably a Cordingley, actually. But I’ll say Anne Lister. She’s the equivalent of a classic rock god, so it’s hard to measure up. We do have a similar fascination with the weather though…

Why did you get involved in the campaign?: I found Gentleman Jack [or she found me] at just the right time. At a low ebb, not unlike Anne coming back to Halifax after her fateful encounter with Miss Hobart, I was astounded to see someone so relatable, so modern. To then find out that Anne was a real woman in time, I had to know more. Everything Gentleman Jack is for the underrepresented - the Gentleman Jack Effect of it all - is absolutely worth continuing. I am here to help save Gentleman Jack because more people deserve to be wowed and comforted by AL and AW.

Favourite episode of Gentleman Jack and why?
It's very difficult to choose just one episode since every one is a masterpiece. The episode with the greatest impact for me is Series 1 Episode 8. The Hilltop scene, even though it didn't happen in the diaries, it really resonates with me. Watching a romantic scene between two women on screen was liberating. Something I'd never seen in an epic period drama. Something I had longed for, but never thought would ever come to fruition. Finally after years of being left out, lesbians finally got our very own "Heathcliff" moment.

Favourite character in Gentleman Jack and why?
Anne Lister of course. From the moment she jumped off the High Flyer I was intrigued and with the first fourth wall break when she said " It must be my driving." I was hooked. I had to know more, so much more, I wanted to know everything about her. Who was she, how was she able to live her life so openly in the 1800s, why had I never heard about such an extraordinary woman? Before finishing the first episode, I began searching all things Anne Lister. That was 2019, four years later and I am still obsessed with her and her story.

Are you an Ann or Anne?:
I believe I am more like Ann Walker. Raised in a very religious family, coming to terms with my sexuality was a constant struggle. Years of being forced to go to Church, believing God thought homosexuality was a sin, l felt like I had to conform, had to deny my sexuality. Not being strong like Anne Lister, I stayed hidden until the age of 40.

Why did you get involved in the campaign?: I was devastated when I found out HBO cancelled Gentleman Jack. Having just found out about Anne Lister and her story after being hidden for almost 200 years, I couldn't believe it was canceled before the story was finished. How could HBO claim to be allies and cancel such powerful representation? Anne Lister is a heroine to the lesbian community, a real woman that lived her life to the fullest regardless of what society thought. Her story must be told in full. I joined the campaign because I refuse to go back into the closet. I want to encourage others to live their lives unashamedly. Gentleman Jack proved to the world that lesbians have always existed and always will. We deserve to see our lives on screen like everyone else.

Since the cancelation of our beloved show the mainstream media seems to be canceling all shows with LGBTQIA+ representation. We can not let that happen. We need to bring back the representation our community needs. We need to save Gentleman Jack because future generations of the queer community need to know their history. Thank you all for joining us to #SaveGentlemanJack

Favourite episode of Gentleman Jack and why? I would have to say (this is at a push because I love them all) episode two of season one because I think it showcases in a single hour the full genius of Gentleman Jack. Scene after iconic scene in this episode features extraordinary dialogue and wonderful performances from all the cast. Laugh out loud moments around the Lister family dinner table and home are sprinkled in amongst displays of jaw dropping intimacy between Anne and Ann. The audience are also treated to a plethora of character development where delight, grief, joy and lots of flirtation come into play. This episode truly sets you up for the rest of the season.
Favourite character in Gentleman Jack and why? Of course I’m gonna say Anne Lister what a character she is. The fact that the character is based on a real life person just blows me away. I also have a soft spot for Aunt Anne and Ann Walker.. all the Ann(e)s!!
Are you an Ann or Anne? Probably Anne - though I can see enormous strength and abilities in both of them. The Ann(e)dom is lucky to have such amazing real life characters to look up to and be inspired by.
Why did you get involved in the campaign?
I was standing in my bathroom washing my teeth when I heard the news, I looked up and I saw my face in the mirror- I have never looked so pissed off. I activated my twitter account for the first time and I have not stopped tweeting since.  Gentleman Jack is such an important show, with its impact far reaching across all communities of people. I just knew I would regret it if I did not do everything I could to help to #SaveGentlemanJack I am delighted to be part of the team.

Favourite episode of Gentleman Jack and why? ooh that's a tough one! I'm gonna go with the season one finale for so many reasons.

Favourite character in Gentleman Jack and why?: Anne Lister. Because she was brave enough to live her best life in a time that offered her nothing. We can all be inspired by that. Plus she's incredibly drawable!

Ann or Anne? Mostly Anne with a little bit of Ann

Why did you get involved in the campaign? I just fell head over heels for Gentleman Jack and Surannes portrayal of Anne Lister. That inspired me to start drawing again and that's been a huge part of the past couple of years of my life. I'm selfish, I don't want to lose that inspiration!

Favourite episode of Gentleman Jack and why?: I don’t have just one favorite but I think both season finales capture the best of the series.

Favourite character in Gentleman Jack and why?: I have to say Anne Lister because reading her diaries is what gave me my interest in the show.

Are you an Ann or Anne?: Anne, I can relate to her on many levels.

Why did you get involved in the campaign?:

I’ve never felt this passionate about a series, I don’t usually get involved in fandoms but I couldn’t help it when hearing of the cancellation. I was angry and wanted to have my voice heard. Sally said in the ALBW live that the fans need to make noise if there’s any hope of it coming back, so that’s why I am here.

Favourite episode of Gentleman Jack and why?: Oh god, that’s a toughie.  If I absolutely had to choose one to watch over and over again, it would of course be Season 1 Episode 8.  I’ve just never seen anything like it before.  I obviously am obsessed with the Hilltop Scene, and with the Marriage Scene, but also smaller moments like Ann Walker arriving home from Scotland and hearing Anne Lister’s words when she looks at her bed, and immediately gets up to go get her.  I also love when Ann Walker goes to Shibden and talks to Marian and Captain Lister, and is shocked to hear that big Anne is home! I have to give honourable mention to Season 1 Episode 2 because while S1E03 is fantastic for obvious reasons, I am such a sucker for a romantic build-up, and S1E02 has sooo much of that: the paper knife, the pockethole scene, and my favourite - the “I’d Love to Paint You” scene. Ugh.  Another honourable mention to Season 2 Episode 1 because of their reunion in York, and the Rievaulx Abbey scene, which is one of the best scenes in the entire series.

Favourite character in Gentleman Jack and why?: Definitely Ann Walker.  I mean, I just have an absolutely gigantic crush on Ann Walker (and Sophie Rundle), but one thing that always stuck out to me about Ann Walker is the depiction of her mental health struggle.  I loved to see queer female representation as high quality as this show, but the way her mental health is represented in a really validating, beautifully supported way meant a lot to me, as I have struggled for many, many years with my own.  I just think she’s so strong, so brave, so under-estimated (and SO cute :))

Are you an Ann or Anne?: I am an Ann for sure.  I would love to say I have the confidence of Anne Lister, but in truth it is something I still struggle with, just like our Ann.  Like I said, I have struggled for a long-time with my mental health and that was what really drew me into Ann Walker.  But one of the reasons I really love Gentleman Jack is how supportive, validating, and caring Anne Lister is with Ann Walker’s mental health.  I am very fortunate and grateful that my partner has been just as patient and supportive all these years with my own journey - she is my very own Anne :)

I just think Ann Walker reflects a lot of the thoughts and feelings that I continue to navigate with sexuality as well, because it’s not easy to continue to be sure of yourself as Anne Lister is, there are definitely moments of fear and doubt, and I think that makes her a very relatable character (and person!).

Why did you get involved in the campaign?: I got involved because this show really matters.  I only came onto Twitter to try to save it, and have had a GREAT time (shout-out to Thirsty Thursdays!).  When I read that HBO had decided not to renew the show, I got so emotional, because I just felt so frustrated that something so important, so relevant, so culturally, socially and emotionally impactful was being taken away prematurely.  I am in my 30’s and have never seen anything in media that has resonated so closely to me as a queer woman, but more importantly, in the Annedom there are women who have waited 60, 70 years to see anything this representational! It is very much more than a show to so many.  It is not hyperbole to say it has changed lives, and saved lives.  It has caused me to do so much reflection in my own life, in a really positive way, and it feels really important to do what we can to bring it back.  We need it.  I also think it has created this really unique community of women whose ages span decades, but who all relate to these women from 200 years ago.  And for me, as a bisexual woman, I’ve never always really known how to fit into the queer community, but with this show, it has created a place for me to fit, has welcomed me, and I want to see the show continue so that the Annedom can expand and welcome more and more people who need it.

Favourite episode of Gentleman Jack and why?: Too hard. How about favourite scene(s) instead: “I think you’re a little bit in love me”; the first kiss in the shed, hut, chaumiere; and all the door kisses.

Favourite character in Gentleman Jack and why?: Anne Lister. She’s confident, motivated, authentic, brave, fascinated, cheeky, and sexy. And vulnerable, flawed, bossy, strong, and feisty. Should I stop?

Are you an Ann or Anne?: Oh honey, I’m Anne. She’s my soft butch hero. I’m not saying I have all the amazing qualities that I listed above, but I aspire to them.

Why did you get involved in the campaign?: I’m completely and utterly in love with this show, and I need more of it. And I want to contribute more to helping get it renewed than just tweeting my little mustachioed butt off!

Favourite episode of Gentleman Jack and why?: I would probably say 2x04, just because of its significance in the story and the history of Anne Lister - really shows what made her, what experiences brought her where she is, including all her fears and insecurities. I also find it funny at times (ie Anne and Mariana reading Ann’s letter) and heartbreaking at the same time (ie Mariana’s realisation and Anne going back to Ann full of remorse). It’s also the episode with that stunning transition from Anne in bed to Anne in a room full of men at the Navigation meeting. Close second is 2x06 in how the past catches up with Anne and also because of the “We Matter” scene…I still remember how it felt to watch that scene for the first time…I was holding my breath throughout, only to start mumbling inconceivable words as soon as that fantastic cello started playing.

Favourite character in Gentleman Jack and why?: Anne Lister - she’s everything and then some…just absolutely fascinated by her.

Are you an Ann or Anne?: Professionally an Anne, personally probably more of an Ann…still haven’t worked everything out, have barely scratched the surface.

Why did you get involved in the campaign?: I actually had tears in my eyes when I read Suranne’s insta post. I couldn’t believe that I had that reaction to the news and I just knew I had to somehow be involved, so for the first time in my life, I have joined the efforts to save a show…I guess though, that’s the thing, it’s not just a show, is it? Hard to describe what it means personally, but also the cultural impact and the historical value it holds.

Favourite Episode of Gentleman Jack and Why?: Umm, such a hard one! I love them all. At a total push I would say S2 E8. The scene where Anne and Ann work together against Captain Sutherland was just genius. Totally loved the whole build up of it.  Ann taking no nonsense and standing her ground against Sutherland, almost calling Anne her wife, Anne looking so proud of Ann! Then the smug ah that Mr. York. Just priceless.

Favourite Character in Gentleman Jack and Why?: Has to be Anne Lister herself. She totally blows me away! I almost find it too hard to comprehend that she was a real life person living her life unapologetically nearly 200 years ago. Staying true to herself and her beliefs against the social norms and no matter what the costs, constantly having to rise above a hostile society. Wow what an epic inspirational historical icon we now have!

Are You Anne or Ann?: I can relate myself to Ann Walker on so many levels, except the dress sense I’m definitely with Anne Lister there, I will always aspire to be more like Anne Lister though as let’s face it who wouldn’t.

Why Did you Get involved in the Campaign?: When I heard Gentleman Jack, which is the best representation for our LGBTQ + community shown on prime time TV ever before, such an important part of our history which has actually changed/saved lives worldwide had been cancelled. I had a huge feeling of disbelief, disappointment and sadness. Not just for myself and our community but for Sally, not being able to continue her life’s work, Surrane and Sophie who both love and totally believe in Anne’s and gave us  their all to give the best portrayal possible. Then the emotional insta messages from Suranne and Sophie and the ALBA between Sally and Pat brought tears to my eyes. Never before had I felt such a immense passion for anything as I do now to do all that I can to help #SaveGentkemanJack our wonderful show.

Favourite episode of Gentleman Jack and why?:
This is a tough one for me because all of the episodes are great with so much detail and fantastic writing gone into all of the episodes I would say probably season 1 episode 3 Ann's first kiss in the hut.  I just feel like it's such a lovely scene and very delicate allowing Ann to open up to Anne lister because Ann was ever so frightened of the whole thing because it was new to Ann at first so we really get to see Ann really open up to Anne.

Favourite character in Gentleman Jack and why?: My favourite character without a doubt in my mind at all Anne lister i think she's incredible at the time  Anne never was scared or anything about being gay which for me has been so inspirational I admire that. Anne lister was herself no matter what and Anne lister's saying was rise above it. I have learnt so many thing's from Anne lister and I love the fact Anne was very masculine and the top hats are my favourite which I have to add i own two top hats now. Anne lister really is someone who i look up to for my role model because she was so different in a good  I am fascinated with her.

Are you an Ann or Anne?: I am absolutely An Anne Lister I love travelling also going to different places in the world I believe life wasn't meant to be kept in one place. I am very much a tomboy as well some say masculine  I am very strong minded which Anne lister was being a businesswoman at the time.  Also I can relate to Anne with the whole writing her diary I also love writing and in life kept journal's as well. In the show it talks a little bit about when people would say mean stuff about Anne I can also relate to that myself.

Why did you get involved in the campaign?: I got involved in the gentleman jack campaign because I feel like such a strong connection with the show and we have to have lgbgt shows around for our voices to be heard. I was immensely upset when i found out gentleman jack wasn't coming back it's such a fantastic British period drama now you don't see much of that these day's around . I believe that Anne Lister wrote her diary not to be kept hidden we all want to hear the full story not just half of it. Anne Lister was a extraordinary woman who we want to hear the rest of the story , this series is more than a series to many it's actually saved people's lives. Sally the writer has been working years on this and wants to continue the show it's raw and beautiful just to be cancelled.

Favourite episode of Gentleman Jack and why?: I love /so/ many episodes, but my favourite has to be the season 1 finale. It's the episode where Ann(e)s get married, what could beat that? And, that hilltop scene...it's perfection. Favourite character in Gentleman Jack and why?: Ann Walker. She's incredible. I'm in awe of her courage and strength. She choose to marry Anne, despite what the society would think, the harassment they'd receive, even her own fears and apprehension.

She did it all for love. I think that's very inspiring. Are you an Ann or Anne?: Anne. I relate to her in many ways, and things she went through. Why did you get involved in the campaign?: Simply put, the story isn't over yet. Anne Lister and Ann Walker deserve to have their whole story told.
