26 volumes and 5 million words (at the last count) make up the diaries of Anne Lister. These volumes were hidden in the walls of an ancient English home for decades and discovered and saved from destruction by chance and sheer luck. One-sixth of these words were written in a cryptic code which hid from the world Anne Lister’s inner thoughts and opinions. The diary providing Anne with a safe space to present her authentic self and true sexual identity. Sounds made up? It really isn’t. From award-winning writer and director, Sally Wainwright, Gentleman Jack tells the true and bold story of the first modern lesbian, Anne Lister [Suranne Jones]. Follow Lister’s adventures as a businesswoman, landowner, a world-traveler, a polymath - and a true force of nature. See it for all the drama and the heartbreak of a woman born ahead of her time. Watch it for the funny interactions with her complex and seemingly uninspiring family. The poignant synergy with her many female companions and friends culminates in her relationship and eventual ‘marriage’ to Ann Walker [Sophie Rundle] who has become an inspiration for many battling mental illness. Their highly relatable lives speak to and inspire millions of people. We want to see Gentleman Jack renewed for a third season. The Ann(e)s story is important and needs to be continued.
