The Save Gentleman Jack campaign began in July 2022 when the TV series “Gentleman Jack” was cancelled by HBO after only just 2 seasons.
It's an effort by fans to get the show renewed for further series and bring back Gentleman Jack!
Sally Wainwright, the show's producer and writer, has indicated publicly on many occasions since the cancellation that the BBC and Lookout Point are very keen to continue making the show. They just need to find another streaming partner.
Our campaign is about spreading our love of the show so that production companies can see that this wonderful show is worth renewing.
Gentleman Jack is a British TV series based on the personal diaries of Anne Lister. This historical drama brought Anne to life, from her success as a landowner and businesswoman, and as “the first modern lesbian”.
For millions of people worldwide, it is so much more than "just a TV show". It’s a social and cultural phenomenon.
Many people see themselves not just in the onscreen LGBTQ+ representation the show provides, but in the historical figures themselves which have been thrown into the spotlight.
TV shows seem to be unceremoniously cancelled now more than ever. However, amidst a wave of cancellations of LGBTQ+ shows, losing Gentleman Jack stung. Not least because this TV show continues to sweep up awards and garner praise.
The decision not to renew Gentleman Jack seemed absurd, and fans immediately began campaigning for the show's revival. We want to see Anne Lister's story, our history, shared with the world in its entirety.
Anyone and everyone can help to save Gentleman Jack.
Joining the campaign is as simple as tweeting your love of the show, or signing the petition. You can write to production companies, buy some Gentleman Jack merchandise, or take part in our online events.
The "Gentleman Jack Effect’" and the passionate fanbase it inspired is an unstoppable force. We’ve already been noticed in major media outlets, flashmobbed Shibden Hall, appeared in Times Square, and much more.
Thanks to the Gentleman Jack cast and creatives, the Anne Lister genie has been let out of the bottle and it is not going back.
